According to British Reuters, the BMW Group said it plans to double the output of electric vehicle batteries at its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. The company is stepping up the production of plug-in hybrid vehicles. In addition to the X5, the X3 plug-in hybrid version will also be put into production. BMW said it will invest 10 million U.S. dollars to build a new battery assembly line. Before launching the plug-in hybrid version of X3 at the end of this year, the assembly line will implement a two-shift work system. BMW produced 15,000 batteries in one-shift operation last year. The factory is currently responsible for the production of the X5 plug-in hybrid version. The company said that a new version of X5 will also be put into production at the Spartanburg plant from August. In order to meet new production needs, BMW plans to hire 120 employees to produce different types of batteries, doubling its output. In the past 4 years, the total battery output of the plant has reached 45,000.
