BYD Expands Battery Business with Focus on Lithium Iron Phosphate Technology


As BYD continues to advance its battery technology, the era of lithium iron phosphate is on the horizon. Since the introduction of the Blade Battery, BYD's battery business has seen significant growth:

  • On December 30, 2020, Fudi Battery Co., Ltd. was officially registered.

  • In 2021, BYD established seven Fudi-affiliated battery companies.

  • In 2022, BYD has already established six more Fudi-affiliated battery companies.

BYD aims to spin off its battery business for independent listing by the end of 2022 to raise funds for further development. With time running short for 2022, BYD's countdown to the independent listing of its battery business appears to be underway.

According to BYD's official announcement on July 4, 2022, the total installed capacity of its vehicle and energy storage batteries reached approximately 34.042GWh from January to June 2022. In comparison, the installed capacity for the same period in 2021 was only around 12.707GWh.

Apart from supplying batteries to China FAW Group Corporation, BYD also provides batteries to Chang'an Automobile and Zhongtong Bus. Furthermore, there are reports suggesting that multinational automakers such as Tesla, Volkswagen, Daimler, Toyota, and Hyundai are in contact with BYD for potential collaborations, with Ford already confirmed.

The underlying logic behind BYD's continuous expansion of battery capacity and international outreach lies in the clear advantages of lithium iron phosphate batteries, particularly in the field of power and charging.
