Great Wall Honeycomb Energy's cobalt-free battery will be mass-produced around June

On March 19, it was learned from the official company Honeycomb Energy, a battery manufacturer under Great Wall Motors, that its newly developed cobalt-free battery will be mass-produced around June. And just last month, the core material for cobalt-free batteries, cobalt-free cathode materials, was officially launched in batches at the Changzhou Material Factory. As we all know, there are two main types of power batteries currently used in new energy vehicles, namely ternary lithium batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries. The former is highly regarded because of its higher energy density and the battery can bring longer battery life. However, although the ternary lithium battery has outstanding performance advantages, because it must require cobalt, which is a rare metal, it greatly limits the development of power batteries. Compared with the ternary battery, the cobalt-free battery newly developed by Honeycomb Energy has the biggest advantage in safety and cost. Taking thermal stability as an example, a cobalt-free battery can easily pass the 150°C hot box test, while a ternary battery will catch fire at such a high temperature. It is reported that Honeycomb Energy’s cobalt-free batteries will cover the two platforms E and H. The batteries on the E platform are mainly used in medium-mileage vehicles, and the battery cell cycle life can reach more than 4000 times. The battery of the H platform is mainly used in high-end vehicles. With the support of module-free battery pack technology, it can achieve a cruising range of 800km. It is worth mentioning that in early February of this year, the core material for cobalt-free batteries-cobalt-free cathode materials, began to officially roll off the production line at the Changzhou Material Factory. This is also the world's first batch of 10-ton mass-produced cobalt-free cathode materials. According to the company’s previous development plan, Honeycomb Energy’s first batch of cobalt-free batteries will be mass-produced in June 2021.
