Successful independent development of high specific energy lithium-sulfur battery

Recently, the 'high specific energy, large capacity lithium-sulfur secondary battery and battery pack' developed by the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences with independent intellectual property rights passed the scientific and technological achievement appraisal organized by the China National Light Industry Council in Beijing . The appraisal opinion is: the overall project technology has reached the international advanced level, among which the energy density has reached the international leading level.

Specific energy is the energy that a battery can release per unit weight or unit volume, and is an important performance indicator of the battery. Lithium-sulfur battery is a kind of high specific energy secondary battery with abundant raw material reserves, environmentally friendly and low cost, and it is also the next generation secondary battery technology closest to practicality. However, elemental sulfur is an insulating material, the electrode reaction activity is low and easy to lose, and the relative lack of battery engineering technology has seriously hindered the practical use of this battery.

In recent years, the research team led by Chen Jian, a researcher at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, has overcome a series of technical problems in lithium-sulfur battery engineering, and has successively developed key materials and keys for high-performance batteries. Recently, the research group has made important progress in the practical use of batteries, and developed my country’s first set of 12kWh lithium-sulfur battery-photovoltaic battery joint demonstration with independent intellectual property rights.
