How to make a breakthrough in battery technology and increase the cruising range of electric vehicles is a major challenge facing automakers. According to foreign media reports, Germany’s ThyssenKrupp and Daimler are developing bipolar batteries for electric vehicles based on lithium-ion technology. Such optimized batteries can allow electric vehicles to reach a maximum range of 1,000 kilometers, effectively handling The current lithium-ion battery life is insufficient. Participating companies in this technology are ThyssenKrupp Automotive Systems Engineering, a subsidiary of ThyssenKrupp, Daimler AG, IAV, and Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technology and Systems. As EMbATT-goes-FAb, it aims to develop large-scale planar lithium-ion batteries that are directly integrated into the vehicle chassis, that is, bipolar batteries for electric vehicles. By researching large-scale manufacturing technology, advancing the industrialization of bipolar batteries, and increasing the range of electric vehicles, the project can provide a more solid foundation for the development of electric vehicles. This project was also sponsored and supported by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (theFederalMinistryforEconomicAffairsandEnergy). Similar to fuel power batteries, bipolar batteries consist of stacked electrodes connected in series. However, the difference between bipolar batteries and traditional lithium-ion batteries is that their electrodes are bipolar, that is, the active materials of the cathode and anode of the battery are used on a common electrode carrier. In addition, the packaging of bipolar battery cells is also different from traditional lithium-ion batteries. The individual lithium-ion batteries are no longer individually packaged in aluminum shells, but stacked on top of each other in a large area. Its magical stacking structure eliminates shell parts and connecting elements, and the released space can be used to fill more active materials, help the battery store more energy, extend the range of electric vehicles, and save the cost of electric vehicles. As a new generation battery system, the bipolar battery can provide an electric cruising range of up to 1,000 kilometers. In this project, the cooperating companies will combine their respective fields of expertise to deal with technical challenges: ThyssenKrupp Automotive Systems Engineering is responsible for expanding assembly technology, and Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technology and System -Manganese-cobalt oxide and graphite are used as storage materials to improve the processing of bipolar electrodes. IAV is responsible for the battery monitoring system, and Daimler is responsible for the safe simulation of bipolar batteries. It is reported that after the completion of the first phase of the project, the quantitative processing of bipolar batteries will begin. The bipolar battery used in the project has a bright future. It is not only suitable for electric vehicles, but also can be used as a distributed energy storage system in photovoltaic systems.
