Hyundai and SKI develop HEV battery

Foreign media reported that Hyundai Motor Group said it will deepen cooperation with SKI to jointly develop hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) batteries, and strive to put them into use in 2024. The two parties will cooperate in the entire process of design, production and quality evaluation to develop safe and cost-effective power lithium batteries that are most suitable for hybrid vehicles. Hyundai Motor said that from 2024, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors, two branches of the automobile group, will use soft pack batteries in hybrid vehicles. At present, SKI has supplied batteries for Kia's SoulEV, EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq6 models, and the batteries are all equipped with Hyundai's dedicated EV platform E-GMP. On April 15th, Hyundai and Kia announced a new strategy for my country, planning to expand to 21 new energy models in China by 2030, while developing all new energy sources including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, pure electric and hydrogen fuel battery Model. It can be seen that Hyundai and Kia’s demand for hybrid vehicles has begun to increase, and the cooperation with SKI on the development of HEV batteries is also a further expansion of the previously jointly developed battery ecosystem by both parties. In fact, SKI has been researching HEV batteries for a long time. As early as 2004, SKI developed a battery for hybrid electric vehicles, which was completed in March 2006, and a three-month trial run with Toyota. Later, SKI also signed a battery supply agreement for medium and large hybrid vehicles with Mitsubishi Fuso, a subsidiary of the German Daimler Group, and supplied batteries for Ferrari's first mass-produced hybrid vehicle. In addition to SKI, GS Yuasa, a Japanese old battery company, has also increased its HEV layout recently. It said it plans to at least double its HEV lithium-ion battery production. It is currently building a second battery plant and plans to start production in 2022. In China, many battery companies, including Honeycomb Energy, Yiwei Lithium Energy, and Xinwangda, have also targeted the HEV lithium-ion battery market and have made major breakthroughs. Behind the intensive layout of head lithium-ion battery companies is the increasingly stringent carbon emission requirements around the world, and the prospects for the HEV market are promising. To avoid the fiercely competitive pure electric market, self-owned brands including GAC, BYD, Geely, Dongfeng, Great Wall and other brands have also entered. HEV models with higher technical barriers but relatively weak competition have become the supporting equipment for domestic battery companies to compete. power. GGII data shows that in the first quarter of 2021, the domestic sales of HEV energy-saving passenger vehicles totaled about 116,000, a year-on-year increase of 147%, and the total installed capacity was about 154MWh, a year-on-year increase of 151%.
