Porsche deploys high-performance batteries

by:CTECHi     2021-09-18
According to Reuters, Porsche, a subsidiary of Volkswagen's luxury sports car, said it is speeding up the development of its electric vehicles and plans to build a factory in Tubingen, Germany to produce batteries for electric vehicles. At present, European automakers rely heavily on Asian battery suppliers. “Batteries are a key technology of the German automotive industry, and our country must also have this technology,” said Porsche CEO Bloom. Porsche will purchase electric car batteries from its parent company Volkswagen. Prior to this, Volkswagen planned to establish six battery plants in Europe and expand the global electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Bloom said, “There will be a market segment for high-performance batteries, just as we have developed high-performance internal combustion engines, we also want to be at the forefront of high-performance batteries.” Porsche Ru0026D director Michael Steiner said that the existing Battery suppliers will focus on increasing production, and will ignore more specialized needs (such as Porsche's personalized needs), so Porsche may have to find batteries that suit its needs from other places. Related information shows that Porsche is cooperating with battery startup CustomCells to produce specialized batteries through the joint venture Cellforce. CustomCells has factories in Itzhoe and Tubingen. Not long ago, Porsche announced that it is studying its own battery cell technology, using silicon anode instead of graphite anode, which will enable the battery pack to work comfortably at higher temperatures, making it suitable for high-performance applications. Gaogong Lithium has learned some relevant information. In terms of battery selection for electric racing cars and super sports cars, Porsche is indeed more inclined to choose cylindrical batteries. A domestic cylindrical battery company revealed that it is doing corresponding preliminary research and development support with Porsche. At the beginning of the year, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said that cylindrical batteries are an important future direction for power lithium batteries. Based on this, Porsche is studying high-power, high-density batteries, and will invest in these batteries. When high-power batteries suitable for sports cars are available, new racing cars will be launched.
