A large-scale energy storage project in Australia has broken ground. It will carry out the development of a 1.5GW solar +500MWh lithium battery storage project. The project was proposed by Sunshine Energy Australia, a new member of the Australian solar field.

According to Gaogong Lithium’s understanding, there is not much information about Sunshine Energy. This is the first project invested in the plant. Sunshine Energy was registered in Australia in 2017 and is headquartered in Melbourne. Its main shareholder is Hong Kong Oriental Alliance Limited.

The energy storage project will cover an area of u200bu200b20.55 million square meters. It will be developed and constructed in three phases of 500 MW power generation. A 1.5GW solar farm will be connected to 275 kV in Queensland. The high-voltage national power distribution network will also be equipped with two substations and a 500 MWh energy storage facility, which will be added later, at an estimated cost of about 3.5 billion U.S. dollars.

According to Sunshine Energy, the solar farm is expected to take about 6-8 months for initial site preparation and 16-24 months to complete the construction. According to the actual situation, it may eventually expand to 2 GW within 36 months.

As for battery energy storage, Sunshine Energy uses a lithium battery energy storage solution called SEA-Power (SEAP). According to its official website, each SEAP unit includes 4MW lithium-ion battery storage, battery management system (BMS), fire extinguishing equipment, thermal management system, switchgear and other components, installed in a 12-meter container. Sunshine Energy said that the SEAP solution can provide a range of grid services and 'solve renewable energy and power quality management.'

With a capacity of 500MWh, Sunshine Energy’s battery energy storage system will become one of Australia’s largest battery energy storage systems. Other large-scale energy storage systems include Hornsdale Power Reserve’s South Australia Tesla large battery (110MW/129MWh) and part of the 200MW solar PV+120 MWh battery project of the Sun River project in South Australia.
